Certification Pathways

Physician in Training*

$250

  • Enrolled in ACGME-Accredited residency/fellowship

  • In training or active, restricted state medical license

  • Pass cognitive exam

Board Eligible**

$1295

  • Completed ACGME-Accredited residency or fellowship

  • Board Eligible status with an ABMS Board, BOS, CCFP, or CMQ

  • In training or active, restricted state medical license

  • Pass cognitive exam

Non-Interventionalist

$1495

  • Completed ACGME-Accredited residency/fellowship

  • Currently, or have been, certified by ABMS, BOS, CCFP, or CMQ

  • Active, unrestricted state medical license

  • 40 hrs of VLM CME in past 2 yrs

  • 100 venous ultrasound cases in past 3 yrs.

  • Pass cognitive exam

Interventionalist

$1495

  • Completed ACGME-Accredited residency/fellowship

  • Currently, or have been, certified by ABMS, BOS, CCFP, or CMQ Board

  • Active, unrestricted state medical license

  • 40 hrs of VLM CME in past 2 yrs

  • 100 venous ultrasound cases in past 3 yrs.

  • 200 VLM cases in past 3 yrs

  • Pass cognitive exam

Additional Pathways Information

ABVLM offers four pathways to ABVLM certification.

Physicians who successfully complete the Physician in Training Pathway and Board Eligible Pathway are recognized for this accomplishment; however, are not considered fully certified by the ABVLM until they complete either the Non-Interventionalist or Interventionalist Pathway requirements.

Physicians who complete the Physician in Training, Board Eligible, or Non-Interventionalist pathways may move to a different level, assuming they meet the eligibility requirements. You do not need to sit for the cognitive exam again as a part of this process. Please contact ABVLM for additional information.

*Physicians may only remain in the Physician in Training status for up to 2 years.
**Physicians may only remain in the Board Eligible status for up to 3 years.

Additional Potential Fees

  • Exam Reschedule:

    • Candidates may reschedule their current appointment to sit for the exam prior to their appointment within the exam window at no cost, as long as there is availability at the testing center.

  • Retest Fees:

    • PiT: $175

    • BE: $875

    • Non-Interventionalist: $1050

    • Interventionalist: $1050
