ABVLM Launches Four New Pathways to Certification, Enhancing Accessibility While Upholding Best Practices

Washington, DC — January 3, 2026— The American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM) is proud to announce the launch of four newly developed pathways to ABVLM certification, opening doors for physicians with diverse training backgrounds and experience levels while maintaining the standards synonymous with the ABVLM.

The new pathways reflect ABVLM’s commitment to both accessibility and excellence in venous and lymphatic medicine. “We recognize that physicians arrive at this specialty through a variety of routes. Our new options ensure every qualified professional has a clear credentialing path—without compromise to the high bar of clinical excellence central to ABVLM,” said Neil Khilnani, MD, DABVLM, ABVLM President.

The new ABVLM certification pathways include:

  • Physician in Training: For individuals currently enrolled in ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

  • Board Eligible: For physicians who have completed training and are ABMS, BOS, CCFP, or CMQ board eligible.

  • Non-Interventionalist: For physicians not engaged in VLM treatment in a clinical setting who are deeply committed to VLM best practices.

  • Interventionalist: For physicians engaged in VLM treatment in a clinical setting.

Regardless of the chosen pathway, all candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to uphold best practices in VLM education, clinical experience, and professionalism.

The application period for the 2026 examination cycle will open on January 15, 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ABVLM website for full details on each pathway’s eligibility criteria.

“We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure that certification in venous and lymphatic medicine is both attainable and meaningful. These pathways reflect that promise,” said Jennifer McCadden, ABVLM Executive Director.
